“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Let's hope that changes when the next issue explores the back-story of Furiosa. Everything is very subdued - all gritty line-work and bleached orange and brown tones - with little in the way of dynamic action scenes to spice things up. The problem is that the comic channels little of the film's frenetic energy or sense of style. These artists work together well in terms of achieving a unified visual tone. This issue features four different pencillers tackling different segments. It also offers a welcome glimpse at the inner workings of his organization and at locations that don't appear much (or at all) in the film. This story doesn't necessarily paint Joe in a more sympathetic light, but it does explore what drives him and how he thinks. The writers provide an in-depth look at his evolution from militia leader in the immediate aftermath of civilization's collapse to the quasi-religious icon he is in the film. Nux could easily have carried an issue on his own.
Unfortunately, this story is over too quickly and abruptly. It sheds more light on why the character was so devoted to the promise of Valhalla in the film yet retained a sense of humanity his "brothers" lacked. Writers Nico Lathouris and Mark Sexton focus on his childhood and how a loving family dynamic (a very rare thing in this world) eventually devolved into heartbreak and loss, with only the promise of an ascension "up there" to Immortan Joe's kingdom kept Nux going. Nux's tale is by far the shorter of the two, which is unfortunate. Both stories are linked by a framing device that offers an intriguing glimpse of how this culture reveres those few stories that survived the apocalypse. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.As the title suggests, this issue focuses on fleshing out the histories of Nux (Nicholas Hoult's character) and the big baddie of the film, Immortan Joe. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa ( Charlize Theron). Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max ( Tom Hardy) believes the best way to survive is to wander alone.
